Historical Significance

In this video, the writer interviews Dr. Abena Busia, chair of the Women & Gender Studies Department and associate professor of English Literature at Rutgers University about the Tran-Atlantic slave trade and its relationship to the Cape Coast Castle.

Busia explains the historical significance of the Cape Coast Castle and the implications of the atrocities that occurred there centuries ago. "It was the Trans-Atlantic slave trade that made the modern world," she says during the interview. Busia believes that there is a general lack of understanding in the United States about the Trans-Atlantic slave trade and hopes that more people will become more knowledgeable about it.

The video also features excerpts from Busia's 2007 excursion to the Cape Coast Castle, where she served as a tour guide to journalist Moira Stuart in the BBC documentary, "In Search of Wilberforce."
