Cape Coast

Monique Reuben was inspired to create "Dark Territory" after she visited the Cape Coast Castle in 2007 during a semester abroad in Ghana. The multimedia project is also based on a travel article she penned about her experience at Cape Coast Castle, while she was an undergraduate at The College of New Jersey.

Like many African-Americans, Reuben believes her roots are connected to Africa. For her, it was important that she visit the Cape Coast Castle to relive the experience of her ancestors.

"This is a place with so much beauty, yet its history is devastating,” she says.

A former magazine writer, Reuben created this multimedia project (her first ever) for her graduate digital media course at Rutgers University.

"I'm new to multimedia, so there was definitely a learning curve in terms of putting this together," she explains. "But I knew that I had a story to tell."

Reuben will be graduating in May 2012 with her MA in Communication and Information Studies. She is also a public relations professional living and working in the NYC metro area. It is her hope that this multimedia piece will enlighten those who are interested in learning more about the Cape Coast Castle, and of course, those who just love a good story!
