"...the
librarian is in the highest sense a teacher" - Melvil Dewey
(1876)
Library
instruction is an academic librarian's most important task. The
needs of the 21st century require librarians to give instruction
in many different formats. Databases and web sites are overwhelming
to patrons until librarians unlock their mysteries by providing
searching skills. Academic librarians also must encourage the use
of print sources. Patrons often neglect these tools and librarians
can reveal their continuing value by providing bibliographic instruction.
In this way they are using the fundamental traditions of academic
librarianship and advancing the field.
