Academic
librarians provide reference instruction by developing unique resources
that address users' specific information needs. The technology of
the 21st century allows librarians to create dynamic resources in
many mediums. These are becoming increasingly user-centered. From
web sites, to bibliographies, to finding aids, these help patrons
navigate through the library's collection more effectively and gain
a more informed perspective on specific sources.
Librarians
further the basic traditions of librarianship by creating resources
that assist collection, classification and access to materials.
They respond to the newer focus on user needs by creating tools
that help patrons accomplish specific tasks. Many resources focus
on clarifying electronic and online sources that confound patrons.
Finally, librarians make use of online formats by creating resources
that patrons can access remotely. These extend library instruction
to the dorm room, office and classroom and are accessible 24-hours
a day!
The
resources that I created embrace a range of technological mediums
and cover a variety of disciplines. These demonstrate that academic
librarians must gain an understanding of many subjects in order
to provide the reference service users require.
